UNU-BIOLAC is accepting applications for our Fellowship Member Programme. Following our mission in Latin America and the Caribbean, we aim to prepare and qualify professionals in biotechnology through specialised training and capacity development. All activities are co-organised with UNU-BIOLAC throughout the region and must be carried out in collaboration with an international network of highly qualified academics and researchers who are experts in biotechnology.

UNU-BIOLAC opens its first call to be part of our Fellow Membership Program. Following our mission to build capacities in Biotechnology within Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), we aim to prepare and qualify professionals through short-term research fellowships. All activities are co-organised with UNU-BIOLAC throughout the LAC region and are carried out in collaboration with an international network of renowned academics and researchers in the field of biotechnology.

Applications are sought from young researchers who are in pursuit the highest level of research excellence with a demonstrated passion for delivering social impact in biotechnology.

    Research fields:

The call is open to young professionals who are engaged in active research and academic activities working in high-throughput and deep sequencing of genomes, metagenomic analysis and whole-genome gene expression to discover new genes and biological functions, which are key technological approaches that provide new insights into three priority areas that were identified in the context of global climate change as challenging the sustainability of traditional cropping systems and the control of animal and human health by affecting the (re)emergence of diseases and their etiological agents and vectors:

During the biennium 2019-2020, UNU-BIOLAC is stressing the use of Big Data as a knowledge-enabling strategy to traverse across the following:

    1. Emerging and neglected human, animal and plant diseases
    2. Environmental microbiology: Metagenomics as a bioprospection tool for bioremediation
    3. Renewable sources of energy (industrial biotechnology)

UNU-BIOLAC fellow membership is committed to biotechnology for social development in Latin America and the Caribbean, and therefore by being part of the UNU-BIOLAC membership program selected fellows are expected to commit to promote science to a broad audience, engage in policy debate, and foster international and interdisciplinary biotechnological research.

    Age/career point:

Applicants should be young professionals or graduate students at a university or a research institution, in pursuit of new research opportunities.

Each UNU-BIOLAC fellowship member is expected to perform specialised research at a laboratory throughout the LAC region for no more than three months, to deliver a final report with their findings and, to follow all request related to their membership, such as a written statement regarding their experience at their host institution, which will be included in their final report, to record a testimonial video, to increment their contact network to expand their research groups, and to upload content on social media that reflects the experimental work they are carrying out at this facility.

To perform their research stay each fellow will receive USD 3000 for travel and living expenses and USD 500 (per month) for bench fee expenses at her/his host institution.
